Below is a list of the classes that are required for a M.S. in Teaching English as a Foreign Language.  I have given a brief description of each course.  Descriptions of these courses can also be found on the SNHU webpage.  I have included some samples of the work that I have done in my time in the TEFL program.  Feel free to take a look!


Course Description Work

EFL 501 - Language Learning and Acquisition

Professor:  Kathy McCarthy

This course explores contemporary knowledge about foreign language acquisition, including the influences of age, environment and motivation; learning styles, multiple intelligences, and learner language and interlanguage. Influence of Personality and Anxiety on Oral Performance Case Study.

EFL 502 - Evaluation and Assessment

Professor:  Liane Haslauer

Students will learn to think clearly about keys to quality assessment. The first part of this course is an introduction of proficiency, achievement, diagnostic and placement testing. Content standards and how they relate to instruction and authentic asseessment of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Using Children's Literature with Young Learners.

EFL 503 - Descriptive Linguistics of American English

Professor:  Denis Hall

This course is a survey of the basic properties of the English language.  This course will give students a basic understanding of the sounds, structure, and appropriate use of the English language.  It includes an analysis of four different areas including phonetics, the lexicon, syntax, and pragmatics.

EFL 504 - Introduction to Curriculum Development, Design and Implementation

Professor:  Kathy McCarthy

Topics include curriculum, syllabus, and lesson planning, with emphasis on observable performance objectives; lesson stages and principles of effective EFL lesson construction; effective procedures for choosing, editing and managing EFL lesson content; long-term lesson planning; teacher roles in the classroom; and principles and techniques for teaching mixed-proficiency level classes. EFL 505 - Overview of TESOL Methodology

Professors:  Fran Kelly & Gary Carkin

This course emphasizes communicative language teaching.  Specific methods and approaches to be explained include grammar translation, audio-lingual method, total physical response, natural approach, phonics, whole language, community language learning, Suggestopedia, Silent Way, cognitive academic language learning, content and theme-based instruction and computer-assisted language learning. EFL 523 - Listening and Speaking Techniques

Professors:  Rosemary Orlando & Tim Dimatteo

This course explains and describes listening and speaking activities and techniques for students with varying proficiency levels and includes teaching simulations by the instructor and participants. Fluency Lesson Plan

Unit Plan

EFL 531 - Pronunciation Techniques

Professor:  Gary Carkin

The course begins with an explanation and description of basic activities and techniques for teaching vowels, consonants, consonant clusters, vowel reduction, assimilation, elision, stress, pitch and juncture.  Resonance and oral muscle control and teaching pronunciation according to first-language background also are covered.
I will be taking this course in March of 2007.

EFL 536 - Content-based Instruction

Professor:  Kathy McCarthy

EFL 537 - Computer-assisted Language Learning

Professor:  Jeff Lebow

This course provides a hands-on environment where students can learn about and explore the use of computer technology for language learners.  Students are encouraged to use the technologies that they will be learning about to develop materials that will be useful in their teaching context.

EFL 540 - Socio-cultural Context of Language Teaching

Professor:  Kathy McCarthy

This course focuses on the influence of society and culture on language learning and teaching.  Some of the areas covered in this course are cultural diversity, language change, regional varieties, and languages in contact (pidgins and creoles).

EFL 599 - Supervised Practice Teaching

Professor:  Kathy McCarthy

Participants have the opportunity to teach a wide variety of courses in the Manchester area. Options include teaching children and adults and teaching life skills and academic English, among others.
