| Abstract: This article believe that using digital stories can improve listening comprehension with Spanish young learners of English. Basically, stories combine with cultural values and perceptions; they build a valuable way of contextualizing and introducing new language. The stories present linguistic forms, grammars, phrases, vocabularies, and formula speech. In addition, the form of large pictures help children reconstruct the storyline. The storyline is good at the logic of the article. Multimedia applications for foreign language learning can provide a more realistic picture of the new language and culture in the classroom, including not only linguistic but also paralinguistic features such as body language, which help to convey meaning to the learners. Digital stories tend to be visual, interactive and reiterative. Learners have to listen to and understand a simple order in order to proceed with the story by clicking on parts of the screen or the picture. The interactivity of Internet-based stories, we assume, may facilitate learning since children are actively involved in decoding and understanding the story. Finally, gains in listening skills and understanding seem to bring benefits to improve children's reading comprehension. |
| My
reflection: I believe that digital stories really can improve listening comprehension. Digital stories combine visual and auditory learning features. Learning language is not boring anymore, especially in children. After I read this article, I have a question in my mind. Why don't we use the digital stories to teach the "adult?" I know the teaching materials have a little different between adult and children. For example, the adults tend to learn authentic situations, they want to know how to do the real communications. However, the children tend to enjoy active animations and funny conversations. For my past experience, I preferred to watch movies, soap series and talk shows. I liked these visual and auditory medias because they can train my listening and speaking. Of course, their conversation is more closer with the real world. My questions: Are there any disadvantages about "digital stories learning?" How do we design "the content of digital stories?" How do we select the suitable digital stories for our students? How many obstacles should we overcome before we use the digital stories teaching? Do you know how many kinds of digital stories we can use them? |
